More work-in-progress

Posted in General, altered art, new work tagged , , , , , , at 3:55 pm by lynnemedsker

Each month I spend a day as a “volunteer” at the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown.  This is where I have a small studio space and also show my work throughout the building.  Part of being a resident artist is taking your turn volunteering.  I always enjoy being able to go the center and spend time on art but it is hard to fit it into the schedule as often as I would like.  So at least when it’s my turn to volunteer it prompts me to go there.  As I am tending the gift shop and greeting the visitors there is still ample time to work on small art projects as well. (Especially since I volunteer during daytime hours on a Thursday…not a high traffic time of the week by any means.)  During my last visit I started on this little (4″x4″ each) five page “book”.

board book side two (in progress) (c) Lynne Medsker 2009

I got both sides of the piece covered with paper, etc. and almost have side “one” complete.  Side two will be the project for my next visit.  It was my first time creating something like this and I had fun playing with the smaller format pages and  putting it together.

I won’t be going back to the center until I return from Colorado (I’m scheduled to volunteer again on April 30th), I will post updated images after that!

Landfill Art Project, update

Posted in General, new work tagged , , , , , at 8:52 am by lynnemedsker

As I mentioned in a previous post I have started working on my hubcap art for the Landfill Art Project.  I had a little time to work on it so I added so organic/freeform wires to the piece.  Here is an updated view:

I have also selected several pieces of the embossed, inked metal art that I have been working on lately to be attached to this piece.  I didn’t have the time to get them attached yet…that will be the last phase of the project and then it should be complete.  Unless I dream up something else to do to it! :)

More to follow soon….

Food as art?

Posted in Fun stuff!, General tagged , , , , , at 11:41 pm by lynnemedsker

I enjoying creating in the kitchen as much as I do getting creative with paint on canvas, with pixels on my computer, by shaping metal or molding clay.  I rarely stick to a recipe and love to add ingredients to make dishes my very own.  Usually the experiments turn out wonderfully but, as with creating art, sometimes there are failures too.

For my daughter’s birthday last weekend she requested a fruit pizza for her dessert instead of the traditional birthday cake.  (Honestly we rarely do cake!)  I hadn’t made one for several years and, although it’s simple, it is a always so much fun choosing which fruits to use as toppings and how to arrange them.  I thought this one turned out so well I even took a photo of it to share.

It tasted just as good as it looked too! :)  If you’ve never had one of these they are delicious!  The crust is a giant sugar cookie which you top with a mixture of cream cheese & powdered sugar.  Add to that a layer of strawberry or cherry “gel” (in this case it was pie filling) and whatever fruits happen to suit you.  Chill it for a bit and it’s ready to eat.  Mmmmm.

Art on Record, Vol. 2

Posted in General, Shows & Receptions, altered art tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 11:13 pm by lynnemedsker

I have decided to participate in the “Art on Record exhibition, Vol. 2″ at the APW Gallery in New York.  The show will feature the walls of the gallery covered in artwork, all created on old albums.  I did a series of art on albums a few years ago and had a lot of fun with it.  Here are a couple samples:

This sounded like a fun project to work on and I still had several blank albums so I am set to go. Plus it ties in with other “recycled” art projects I am working/planning on!  The show runs from May 1st to May 25th, 2009.

I will probably take the blank records with me to Colorado and create the art there then ship them directly to the gallery in New York.  A few less pieces of art I’ll have to transport back home when I finished with my stay!  I am a bit torn about creating art while I am there.  Right now I am feeling the urge to work LARGE and create some big, beautiful pieces of work but getting the supplies and finished work back & forth is quite a challenge and smaller pieces would be more managable (and less expensive) to transport.  I guess I will have to determine how important BIG is to me now!  A compromise may be to get the smaller individual elements created for the larger pieces then wait until I am back home to actually assemble them.  So much to think about…

    Beginning

Posted in General, altered art, new work tagged , , , , , , at 12:57 pm by lynnemedsker

I finally started on the Landfill Art Project that I’ve been talking about for a couple of months.  For some reason just getting myself to START can be one of the hardest steps!  I’m glad I’ve got it underway now, I want to have it finished within the next week so I can get it sent back before I head out for my three week stint as guest artist at The Tin Shop in Colorado.  Basically all I’ve done so far is add color to the hubcap.  I also selected several smaller, colorful pieces to incorporate into the artwork. Here are some images of my progress so far:

    Friday night events…

    Posted in General, Shows & Receptions tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 2:36 pm by lynnemedsker

Gee, seems like it used to be everyone was having a “first Friday” events but lately my “second Friday” has been busier than my first!  Events I have a connections with that are on tap for this Friday, March 13th, are as follows:

Various locations in central Indiana -

“March Madness” Second Friday Art Opening at Continental Office Environments, 9202 East 33rd Street, Indianapolis, IN 317.630.2315.  From 5 – 7 pm. The opening will feature new works by Broad Ripple Art & Design artists Quincy Owens, Elizabeth Guipe-Hall, Andy Chen, Teri Barnett, Doug Arnholter, Amy Brier, Nanette Winter, James B. Campbell, Mark Medsker.

“Culture at the Creek” event at Sugar Creek Art Center, 127 South Pearl Street, Thorntown, Indiana, 765.436.7102.  From 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. On display: “Contentment in Color” the Art of Sue Semenick.  Visitors can enjoy light refreshments and live music while browsing the Center’s three floors of permanent fine art studios and displays. Live art demonstrations by visiting local artisans are scheduled throughout the facility and many of the Center’s 20 resident working artists will also be available in their studios throughout the evening.

“Close to Home” featuring the art of Mason Archie and William Lawson.  Opening reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hoosier Salon Broad Ripple Gallery, 714 E. 65th Street, Indianapolis, 317.352.5340.

    Non-local events -

“Multiplicity” Annual Spring National Juried Art Event at Union Street Gallery 1527 Otto Blvd., Chicago Heights, IL 708.754.2601. Free to the public, with the opening Reception & Awards on March 13 from 6-9 p.m.

If I could have worked it into the schedule I would have loved to have visited the Union Street Gallery during the reception but it just didn’t turn out that way.  As of today my game plan is to be at the Continental event as close to 5 as possible, hang there a bit then head west to Thorntown for the end of the evening.  If I’m really quick I could pop in at the Hoosier Salon as I make my way across town but I will wait & see on that one.

Be sure & mark your calendar for next Friday, March 20th, for  ”The Not First Friday Show” opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at Urban Optiks in Broad Ripple! I will post a reminder as that event gets closer.

Hope to see you somewhere out & about!

    Lynne
