Seems like my life has been consumed with letters, words, sentences and paragraphs this week.  It’s exhausting!  After my stay as guest artist at The Tin Shop in Breckenridge, CO this past April I moved “applying for residency programs” up on my list of priorities.  I would be delighted if I could get accepted to one each year or two!  The time to dedicate to my art and explore new surroundings is such a blessing to me! The downside of making that a priority is all the thinking, writing and paperwork required for each submission.  Some are more detailed than others (multiple, collated copies or specific required information) but they all take quite a bit of time and effort for me to prepare.  Although I can chat on my blog, Facebook or Twitter quite easily (often more frequently than I should!) I struggle to perfect my formal writing tasks.  It is usually a multi-day process, with several revisions, before I am pleased enough with my efforts to set them forth into the world for others to read.  I try to make my proposals specific to the location and facility that I am applying to so that each seems thoughtful and unique instead of submitting a plain, generic request.  Add to that there is the selection process of what media I will apply for and what images to submit as samples of my work to consider.  If you’ve followed this blog at all you know I skip around from one media to another on a frequent basis.  Trying to narrow the focus of a submission is tough!   I am always second guessing myself on what they might be looking for, what media would stand out best and how to present it.  Frequently you need to include one or more public programs during your stay as well – another decision to make! I guess the upside of sending out several applications each year is that I can vary the proposals enough that I cover everything I’d like to do at one location or another. :)  As I was looking through some of my images for the submission I mailed out today, I ran across these two images.  I had posted some similar work when I was in Breckenridge but didn’t include these.  Since it seems all I’ve done is look at words & letters lately they were a natural choice to include in this post!

I had just read somewhere a few days ago that visual expression and verbal/written expression come from totally different parts of the brain and many people are dominate in one area but not the other.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that one comes more easily to me than the other!  My secondary goal with these submissions is to actually get them sent BEFORE the postmark deadline, I tend to procrastinate and frequently make last-minute trips to the post office on the very last possible day.  This time I was three whole days early, so progress is being made!  I am looking forward to a month-long break before beginning on the next round of submissions (Three!!) that I’ll start working on in September.  Hey, maybe now I can make some art instead of just writing about it!

Only 5 days until “30 Days of Art” begins!

It’s not too late to join several of us as we take the “30 day challenge” of creating art (or pursuing other passions) on a daily basis for an entire month.  This would be especially helpful if you feel like you need something to jump start your creativity – accountability is a strong motivator!  Feel free to comment to this blog or email me if you are interested in participating.  Here’s a link to the original post and information: 30 Days of Art

I am gathering supplies and plotting out some projects to keep me busy for the month!

Oh, how I love quotes!  I couldn’t help but put these all together into one piece of art when I found them, it was just too hard to resist.  The background consists of several layers of photos that I took of a decorated egg! I know the image is small so here are all the quotes:
“Dreams soar on the wings of imagination” (Unknown)
“The world is but a canvas to the imagination” (Thoreau)
“Imagination is the air of mind” (Bailey)
“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” (Einstein)

Have an imagination-filled day!

Life…

Every once in a while we are startled by the shortness and unpredictability of life.  Today was one of those days.  I’ve no words of my own to say right now but share this quote with you, agreeing with it wholeheartedly.

Start living now. Stop saving the good china for that special occasion. Stop withholding your love until that special person materializes. Every day you are alive is a special occasion. Every minute, every breath, is a gift from God.  (Mary Manin Morrissey)

Some new photo/digital work…

Posted in General, digital art, new work, photography tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , at 4:29 pm by lynnemedsker

I realized a day or two ago that I needed to get my images to the printers for an upcoming competition so they would be ready before the drop-off date.  Things like that just continue to sneak up on me (and, on more than one occasion, past me by).  I have dozens and dozens of photos, digital art and other images but when it comes to a competition I look through them all and feel less than excited, even by pieces that just a week ago I thought were great.  It seems I am only pleased with new work!  So, after sorting through my images and selecting some from the current stock I decided to create a couple new pieces to add to the mix.  Now I’m happy! :)

This piece will compete in a creative photography category.

I know the images is smallish so I’ll reprint the quote: ”The human body is not a thing or substance, given, but a continuous creation. The human body is an energy system which is never a complete structure; never static; is in perpetual inner self-construction and self-destruction; we destroy in order to make it new.” (Brown)  On a side note: If you are in the Indianapolis area and are looking for a personal trainer I would certain recommend my “model” for this piece.  (This is an image from some promo shots we took last year for his business.)  Click here to check out his website “Designer Fitness by Flavius“. Not only can you learn all about his training services it shows off some of the other promotional photos that were taken.  I also designed the website and his logo!

The second piece I created is something I’ve had in mind/on my mind for well over a year now.  I made it specifically as a gift for my massage therapist, once it’s done at the competition I will give it to her. I am a firm believer in getting regular massages as part of staying healthy. It is such a wonderful escape from the busy-ness and worries of daily life.  Like a short, sweet trip to a warm, pleasant island.  Ahhhh!  If she reads my blog then I guess this won’t be a surprise gift but I think she’ll be pleased, none-the-less.

I enjoy making art with a specific topic or theme from time-to-time.  I can still use my imagination but it gives me some “walls” to work within so I don’t get to scattered with my ideas. Let me know if you have any project that need an artistic touch!

Creatively,

30 Days of Art

Posted in Fun stuff!, General, inspiration tagged , , , , , at 12:51 pm by lynnemedsker

An artist friend & I were chatting online about how hard it is to create art on a daily basis. “Real life” responsibilities, events and duties often intrude upon (or completely take over) what time we have to make our art.  Having heard of similar programs/challenges we have decided to deem the month of August our “30 Days of Art” month and will push, pull, encourage, shame, cheer on, plead or otherwise motivate each other into creating some new work of art each day.  I’m posting this here so that not only will I be accountable to myself and my friend, I will be accountable to everyone who reads my blog!  I promise to post updates throughout the month, along with a few images as well.  There is a little over two weeks to prepare, if you would like to join me for the August challenge that would be fantastic too!

What are you passionate enough to pursue for 30 days? Think of something you never seem to have time for (don’t limit yourself to art – that’s just my chosen subject).  Could you push yourself to do it daily for an entire month?

Creative wishes,

Lynne

Perhaps you’ll have such beautiful photos from the first workshop you’ll be inspired to come back and color them in the second!  I hope we get to spend some time learning together at one or both of these events.

Although my love for photography doesn’t really ebb & flow the time that I spend pursuing it certainly does!    I used to just jump in the truck as the sun was stretching over the horizon and drive around the countryside shooting whatever jumped out at me. It’s been a long while since I’ve taken my camera out for a day to just see where we end up.  I miss doing that!

Right now I have a dear friend who is in Ireland doing all kinds of awesome photography (hi Diane!) and the scenes she’s been sending back home are just inspiring!  Between her beautiful images and an upcoming project I signed up for I have the motivation to get out and do some shooting soon. Now to find the time to go along with it! The project is called  “Nature Awakens Creativity” and it is part of the Central Indiana Land Trust’s “Spirit & Place” Event.  As part of the project I will visit one (or more!) of the Land Trust’s nature preserves to capture my images.  There will be a standing exhibit of all the work from participating artists on display at the Indianapolis Art Center from October 1st through November 23rd, 2009.

I am excited to get back to my artistic roots.  What upcoming projects are you looking forward to doing?

(re)discoveries…

Posted in General tagged , , , , at 5:10 pm by lynnemedsker

We spent the morning & early afternoon cleaning out the garage today.  One of those things on the “to do” list that I’ve been anxious to get to.  I needed some empty shelves in the garage before I could start doing some clean sweeps of other, indoor rooms.  I am feeling claustrophobic lately with closets, drawers and rooms overstuffed.  It is time for a some organization and more open spaces!  As I was cleaning I found so many “one of these day” projects and materials I had stashed away for future use.  They are now up front & center on the shelves, peering at me from their new location each time I pull my truck into the garage.  No more “out of sight, out of mind” so I hope that will motivate me get creative with them as soon as the big clean is over!

Does anyone else have these stashes of treasures just waiting for their turn to be useful?  What motivates you to use them or keeps you from doing so?

Lynne
