Sometime

What an apt title. Sometime I get away from blogging. But I always return. This time with some new art to share. I’ve been very prolific lately, which is awesome. It just doesn’t correlate with regular blogging. Two sides of the brain I think!

Remember a while back when I shared with you all the gelli prints I’d been making? Well I finally decided what I’d do with them. They make AWESOME background for mixed media art! Add in some book pages, decorative & tissue paper, top it off with charcoal outlines and acrylic ink plus some fun designs with pens and voila! Here are a couple of images of the work in progress.

It certainly ends up looking totally different from the starting point! In addition to this artwork I’ve also complete four large (24×36″) canvases in this style as well as a set of five 6×6″ wood panels. The titles for all the new work come from some of the text that is still visible when the piece is complete. This one had the least text showing of all the new art but from what I could read “sometime” seemed perfect. I’ll be deviating from the geometric for the next few pieces but I’m sure I’ll return!

Thanks for continuing to follow this blog, it’s really appreciated!

Backbeat #4

A few years ago I created a three-piece artwork entitled “Backbeat”. This spring it was purchased by one of my collectors, with the request that I also create a forth piece to add to the set. I was more than happy to oblige, and the work began.

Next came a layer of sewing patterns to add some detail and guidelines for painting.

That was followed by some drippy layers of acrylic ink.

After those layers dried it was time to start adding some geometric patterns with charcoal.

The piece was sealed and then the detail painting began.

Following the painting was adding the dimensional details – including old records & CD’s plus a few acrylic shapes too. Voila! Finished.

I really enjoy creating art in this style. Since finishing this piece I’ve covered some new wood panels with background, just waiting for me to get to them. Soon? I hope!

The Art of Wine – Part 2

FB Wine Bottle 1, Art of Wine 2014

Here is another bottle for “The Art of Wine” event coming up on July 19th. Rather like night and day compared to the first one! 🙂 This bottle was covered with old dictonary pages before I began drawing/painting on the surface. I had printed this vintage lady on a book page several months ago, not quite sure what I’d use her for and she just seemed to fit perfectly!

From there I just let my imagination run. Evidently it ran right to a flower gardern, which isn’t surprising as I’d been putting in flower gardens around the house!

I went back over some of the detailed background with some neutral spray paint to soften and tone down the colors, they were a stealing the attention from the beautiful lady!

So that was my fun with giant wine bottles. Hope you enjoy it too!

The Art of Wine – Part 1

FB Wine Bottle 2, Art of Wine 2014Saturday, July 19th from 5 – 10 p.m. in the Carmel Arts & Design District is “The Art of Wine” event! The streets are closed and wineries and artists set up their booths for your sipping, viewing and purchasing pleasure. What fun! As part of the celebrating area artists were asked to created art on GIANT wine bottles that will be on display throughout the district. This year I created two bottles, just for fun! Today I’m sharing the first. Spray paint, digital art collaged onto the bottle and then some crazy doodles with markers.

Any ideas for titles?

Conjecture

Well, it’s finally here! The last piece of artwork from last year’s solo show “RE:Imagined, Created, Purposed”.

Blog, 2013-05-22 15.49.03-1

Beginning with a piece of foam core that would be mounted on a wood panel, I drew and cut out various shapes. Originally I thought I would use one of the panels covered with old book pages but the design seemed too busy for that so I switch to one of the panels I had painted black. Blog, 2013-05-08 11.53.52

One I had the design decided upon I leafed through my magazine stash and selected images that went together well. I was really excited to include the peacock feather in with the other images. 🙂

For a little added interest I used three of the rolled magazine pages that were left from creating “Ceremonial” and “Continuum” for an accent in the upper right corner of the piece. I have more pieces left and have been thinking of other artwork I can use them in so you may see that again in the future!

Next week I’ll begin with some new work and then hop around to get caught back up from last fall and this spring. At least I won’t run out of content for a while!

The last of three pieces on the blog this week, all created using the same technique, this one titled “Abundantly”. Although very time consuming (and hand cramping!) to draw and cut the paper cut over-lay, I enjoyed creating these pieces that combine my love of the mandala form and for old book pages. I hope you have enjoy viewing them as finished pieces and during the process of them being produced.

Until next week!

Similar to “Ambience” that was posted earlier this week, this piece was also created on a 12×12″ wood panel using old dictionary pages and cut paper. Here are some images of the process/progress along the way:

One piece left to share with you that goes with Ambience & Adventure….look for it Friday!
