Old Growth

Some pieces of art come very easily and others you have to wrestle, argue, ignore, cajole and fuss with for months to finally figure out what they want to become. This is one of those pieces!

It isn’t just me that struggled with it, my artist friend Doug finally was exasperated enough with it that he gave it to me at a play date with instructions to finish it. 🙂 Now if you clicked that link you’ll know it’s been a LONG time that I’ve had this piece in the studio! I began working on it during the play date buy taking a hammer to it and chipping out some of the background texture and edges, adding more concrete and even adding some color that day. Here are images of it as it transitioned from phase to phase – and I know I missed a lot of the stages!

After this last image I used it to test some spray paint on but didn’t get a photo of that (although you can see some of it on the next image). What it had turned into was a piece I let my young grandson paint on because, honestly, he couldn’t do any worse!

And his creativity is just what got me inspired and going in the direction I needed to! Why I’d not tried my one of my favorite color schemes before is still a mystery to me.

Finally it was (or I was?) moving toward a finished image!

Once the tree appeared all that was needed was a bit of green, some outlining and highlighting and it was finally complete. Whew. I can’t imagine it looking like anything else now!

This piece is included in the “Mixed Well & Served Fresh” show that has been held over at Artistic Designs Gallery in Brownsburg, Indiana. You need to come see it in person to appreciate all the layers, depth and texture! I’ll be there with it tomorrow during the ArtsGo! event too, I’d love to meet you!

Open Studio for Earth Day: Recycled Journals

As an early celebration of Earth Day (officially held on April 22nd) the next “Open Studio” day is this coming Wednesday, April 25th from noon to 2:30 pm. We will be creating “recycled” journals using old cereal boxes, scrap paper and other leftover materials or art from previous open studio dates. Here are samples of previously created journals:

Please email me at info@lynnemedsker.com to sign up for this class. When I confirm your enrollment I will send you a list of ideas of materials you may want to bring & include with your creation, although the all basic supplies are included in the $30 class fee.

Due to a scheduling conflict the “Art from Nature” open studio day scheduled for April 28th has been cancelled. Most likely it will be one of this new classes when open studio days resume.

Hope you can come & create on the 25th!

Saturday Open Studio! February 25th, 2012

student artwork, watercolor class 1/11/12

I’ve been having a lot of fun with the “Open Studio” classes this year but thus far they’ve all been weekday/daytime. Obviously that doesn’t work for everyone! So I’m adding one Saturday a month to the schedule. This coming Saturday, February 25th, will be the first session. It runs from 9:30 to noon and we’ll be playing with watercolors! Using a variety of techniques and surfaces we’ll playfully explore this fun media. This is an encore of the class held in January – click here to read the recap.

The cost for the class is $30 and includes all the materials. If you’d like to pre-pay for three classes you can do so at a discounted rate of $75 for all three. Please  email (info@lynnemedsker.com) to reserve your place as class size is limited! Future “Open Studio” classes include:

Wednesday, Feb. 29th – “Yupo Play” – watercolor on this fabulous paper can take you to places you’d never imagine!

Wednesday, March 14th – “Wall Sculpture” part 1 – the beginning of a two-part class, we’ll use wood, metal and other materials to create an abstract wall sculpture. The second part of this class will be held on Wednesday, March 28th.

Saturday, March 24th – “Creative Collage” – an encore of the February 1st class, you’ll design and create an 8×10 collage on a ready-to-hang wood panel. You can view images and a recap of that class by clicking here.

Wednesday, March 28th – “Wall Sculpture” part 2 – Continuing from the March 14th class we will complete the assembly and final details on our mixed media wall sculptures.

Wednesday, April 11th – “Art from Nature” celebrating Earth Day 2012 a little early (April 22nd is the date) we will create mixed media art that includes natural elements (rocks, wood, etc.) Feel free to bring your own “treasures” to include in your art!

Wednesday, April 25th – “Recycled Journals” – continuing to celebrate the earth we will create small, decorative journals from recycled materials!

Saturday, April 28th – “Art from Nature” an encore of the the April 11th class, we may even hold this class outdoors if weather permits!

ALSO! Don’t forget about the upcoming “design your own” metal sculpture workshop coming the first weekend of March. Read all the details here!

Can’t wait to see you at one, three, or all these events!

Upcoming Class: Layers & Lattes

"layers & lattes" creative workshop at Artistic Designs Gallery

How much fun is it to be able to use an image like this to advertise a class? 🙂 You are invited to join me for an evening of fun, creativity and, YES, lattes! I’ll be presenting this class at Artistic Designs Gallery (152 E. Northfield Drive)  in Brownsburg, Indiana on March 9th, 2012 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Layer a variety of papers, found objects and embellishments as you build your own unique piece of art to treasure. All supplies are included in the playful class, although you are welcome to bring small objects, papers or other treasures you would like to include in your creations if you desire. Aluminum Prints

I’ve been slowly building my inventory of prints on aluminum for an upcoming show. The last order I tried out some images printed on oval shapes. I really like the way they turned out!

If you’ve not seen images printed on aluminum you should make a point of seeing these in person, these photos don’t do them justice!

High gloss finish, float mounted, with vivid colors – these pieces really pop! The scratch resistant surface of these light-weight pieces is a breeze to wipe clean with a bit of window cleaner. Style & convenience all in one piece!

These particular prints are in my studio right now but you can see other samples of digital art on aluminum at both Artistic Designs Gallery in Brownsburg, Indiana or ArtSplash Gallery in Carmel, Indiana.

I’ll post more aluminum print images soon!
