Open Studio Class: Mixed Media on Illustration Board

Thursday, May 10th from noon to 2:30 p.m. will be the last Open Studio class for a few months, I’ll be taking a short “summer break”!

It’s going to be a good one though, mixed media on illustration board! Using a combination of paint, markers, wax and contact paper we will map out an abstract design and paint it section by section. Using the clear wax on the background adds an element of surprise where the paint doesn’t adhere to the surface!

As with past open studio classes, the cost is $30 for the 2 1/2 hour session and includes all supplies. Come on out and play, it’s your last chance for a while!

Please note – this class is being held on THURSDAY instead of the normal day of the week, Wednesday.

Open Studio for Earth Day: Recycled Journals

As an early celebration of Earth Day (officially held on April 22nd) the next “Open Studio” day is this coming Wednesday, April 25th from noon to 2:30 pm. We will be creating “recycled” journals using old cereal boxes, scrap paper and other leftover materials or art from previous open studio dates. Here are samples of previously created journals:

Please email me at info@lynnemedsker.com to sign up for this class. When I confirm your enrollment I will send you a list of ideas of materials you may want to bring & include with your creation, although the all basic supplies are included in the $30 class fee.

Due to a scheduling conflict the “Art from Nature” open studio day scheduled for April 28th has been cancelled. Most likely it will be one of this new classes when open studio days resume.

Hope you can come & create on the 25th!

Open Studio Session: Yupo Play!

Originally to be held on February 29th 2012, this session has been rescheduled to NEXT Wednesday, March 28th!

We are going to explore creating art on Yupo paper a little more in depth after a brief introduction to in a few months ago. Yupo is a synthetic type of material (not a true “paper”) that resists absorbing paint. That means you can spend lots of time manipulating the paint on the smooth surface before your image dries. If you feel you’ve overworked your image or you just plain aren’t satisfied with it you can even “erase” your watercolor from the surface of you paper and start fresh.

It’s a fun, rather unpredictable, material to play with and explore. No wonder I like it so much – you can have some wonderful “happy accidents” with it and create awesome images you didn’t even know you were trying to create until they appear. 🙂

So be sure and sign up soon before all the spaces are taken for this fun afternoon! The session runs from noon until 2:30 p.m. The cost for the class is $30 and includes all the materials. If you’d like to pre-pay for three classes you can do so at a discounted rate of $75 for all three. Please  email (info@lynnemedsker.com) to reserve your place as class size is limited!

Future “Open Studio” classes include:

Wednesday, April 11th – “Art from Nature” celebrating Earth Day 2012 a little early (April 22nd is the date) we will create mixed media art that includes natural elements (rocks, wood, etc.) Feel free to bring your own “treasures” to include in your art!

Wednesday, April 25th – “Recycled Journals” – continuing to celebrate the earth we will create small, decorative journals from recycled materials!

Saturday, April 28th – “Art from Nature” an encore of the the April 11th class, we may even hold this class outdoors if weather permits!

A few clases in early May will be announced soon and then there will be a break for the summer months so don’t miss these next few classes!

One week away, Yupo Play!

One week from today, on February 29th 2012, is the next Wednesday edition of the “Open Studio” classes I am holding here at my studio. We are going to go back to watercolors and explore creating art on Yupo paper a little more in depth. Yupo is a synthetic type of material (not a true “paper”) that resists absorbing paint. That means you can spend lots of time manipulating the paint on the smooth surface before your image dries. If you feel you’ve overworked your image or you just plain aren’t satisfied with it you can even “erase” your watercolor from the surface of you paper and start fresh.

student artwork, watercolor class 1/11/12

I’ve been having a lot of fun with the “Open Studio” classes this year but thus far they’ve all been weekday/daytime. Obviously that doesn’t work for everyone! Printmaking Play

These are a few of the new prints I created when I had my open studio/play dates last month. It was fun just playing again and I really like the textures in these pieces. I may use them for something else or some of them may stay exactly as they are, it’s hard to say at this point.

I had a total of 11 visitors come by and play with gelatin prints during the open studio times! It is always so fun to see how others create using the same materials and processes, I’m always amazed.

I plan to have more open studio play dates in 2012 – stay tuned for details!
