Lettering Short-Cut

I love to include words, quotes and text in my art but, despite some instruction and practice, I’m not always thrilled with the way my hand drawn letters turn out. This little hack is a favorite of mine and I thought you might find it useful as well! This was just an impromptu, messy fingers project that popped into my head one day. The first step was to add acrylic paint to the board I was painting. Somedays my favorite paint tools are my fingers, and this was no exception.

I have accumulated a large selection of fonts on my computer (there are many resources for free downloadable fonts available online) and have fun using different ones in digital creations, advertising and such. They are especially handy when lettering on artwork! Some of my batik work is done on Unryu paper which is transparent enough you can actually just trace the letters onto the paper as they are visible when placed underneath.

Batik art, three steps – lettering, adding ink, after the batik process

If I’m working on wood or canvas I have a way of getting the letters on my art that works very well. First I measure the space where I want the words placed and create a blank file in Photoshop Elements that is the same size. Then, using the type function I type, resize and arrange the letters to suit my project. This is what the file looked like for the project I am showing you:

I printed it the exact size as the file (which meant it had to be printed in two sections) and then taped together the pieces. The next step was to turn it over and take either pencil or charcoal and cover the back of the paper where the letters were printed.

You want to cover it fully, the pencil or charcoal is going to be used like copy paper to make outlines of your letters onto your art. Turn it over and position it where you want the letters to be on your art and then take a ball point pen and trace the outlines of each letter. I get excited and always want to rush things so come to find out my paint wasn’t as dry as usual, I ended up lifting some of it from the wood when I applied the marks. It still worked!

Now that I had the outline on the artwork I could use markers, paint pens or a really steady brush to add the colors and outline for the lettering and any details I decided to include. I decided to just handwrite the “hello” portion of the lettering and kind of wish I’d have traced that too. Oh well! Here is the final piece.

Let me know if you try this technique for adding letters, I hope it’s inspired you to get creative!

Artists! Kick it up a notch!

The “Web Presence for Artists” workshop today at Sugar Creek Art Center was great! Information was flowing everywhere and, as always, I gathered some great tips as well. I loved the energy of having 10 artists together at the same time, sharing and learning! If you were unable to attend I hope to schedule another of these workshops in late September (I’ll post the info as soon as the details are worked out). In the meantime I wanted to pass along this information for you to take advantage of! Be sure to read about the limited time offers at the bottom of the page and contact me by September 5th to take advantage of those special prices. I am currently scheduling session in late September and beyond, when would you like me to help you improve your online presence?

A Special Offer – Just for Artists!

From exercise to photo art!

These images kind of morphed from their original intent into something entirely different! I love when that happens! They began as small magazine clippings that I cut, all to be glued into art journals and used as inspiration for future art compositions. Mostly looking for interesting shapes & lines I also ended up with a lovely variety of colors. As I continued clipping them and piling them on the table I could see how awesome they would look if photographed together. Out came the camera!

I was sure that I’d upload them and then throw them into Photoshop to create some kind amazing digital artwork but the more I looked at them the more I enjoyed them just as they are! So now I’ve got even more motivation to continue with the art journals. Taking photos of the groups of images as well as inspiration from each individual one, a rather accidental form of multitasking. 🙂

What motivates and inspires you?

Lynne Medsker: International Artist!

"rock my world #5" digital art triptych, printed on aluminum © Lynne Medsker

Woot!! Cool news from the weekend, I have two sets of digital art traveling to their new home in England today.  These pieces were part of the new art display at ArtSplash Gallery in Carmel, Indiana for the month of June, even if they didn’t get to stay there long. 🙂 Printed on aluminum, each piece was 10″x 20″ and covered an area of 32″ x 20″ when hung together.

I loved the bright colors and the way they seemed to pop off of the aluminum! I have had several pieces printed on aluminum, it is beautiful, lightweight and maintenance is a breeze. I hope the new owners will be as excited about them as I am! Although I am a bit jealous that my art is traveling and I am not. 🙂

Happy Monday,

Lynne

Green Art

fractal art #11j © Lynne Medsker

I didn’t want my blog to get pinched on St. Patrick’s Day! It was kind of fun searching for some green art to feature that hadn’t already been online, I ended up digging through the digital art files to find these. They include a couple of fractal art pieces, some of my very early digital art, part of my “Static” series and one unfinished series that I started and didn’t get past the second piece. So enjoy a little bit ‘o green here then enjoy your celebrations of the day!

It’s back – Retro Friday!

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done a Retro Friday post! And a long time since I’ve posted any Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s). SO…why not do both at once? Although most of the ATC’s I’ve done have been hand crafted I have done some digitally, which is what I decided to feature on the blog today – just for fun! With the exception of a card I created for a “Children” themed swap these all feature a variety of vintage photos. I’ve got literally hundreds of these vintage images to play with, it’s always fun to pull some out and get creative. Several of these cards had other little embellishments added to them after they were printed. I still have some of each design if anyone wants one or wants to do a swap I am up for it! Just leave a comment on this post or send me an email. Enough chatter…on to the images:

I have to admit the last one is my favorite!

If you are curious about ATC’s there is information about it on my website, as well as link to other sites with info on how they are made. I haven’t done an ATC class for a while but they are a really great activity for a group of friends, keep it in mind next time you & your friends are looking for something to do!

I hope to see many of you at the opening reception for my show in Plainfield this Sunday, have a great weekend!

Lynne
